The Difference Between Losing and Being Lost

If you followed along the Kentucky Baseball season with me, you know it wasn’t exactly a straight line.

There were high expectations coming in, frustrating stretches in SEC play, big wins, tough losses, and plenty of moments where it felt like the season could go in a few different directions. That’s baseball, especially in May and June. Over the course of a long year, every team faces setbacks at some point.

But when it came down to it, the Wildcats were still standing in the NCAA Regionals with a chance to keep playing. And not just technically alive. They were right there, within a swing of potentially hosting a Super Regional.

Down 5-1 at West Virginia in the regional championship (the night after giving up a late lead), Kentucky fought all the way back in the 8th inning. A three-run home run. Another solo shot. A tied game. Suddenly, a season that had been full of ups and downs was one swing, one pitch, or one bounce away from moving on.

Then baseball did what baseball does. West Virginia walked it off in the 10th, and just like that, the season was over.

That kind of ending hurts. But it also tells you something dealing with expecations.

Because there’s a difference between losing and being lost.

Bracketology for Benefit Plans: Building Your Self-Funded Dream Team

Every spring, college baseball fans start making predictions about the postseason and who might make the College World Series. Who has the pitching depth? Which lineup is built for a long run? Who actually has the right pieces to make it to Omaha?

For Kentucky fans, those conversations are becoming an annual tradition that continues this year as we get ready to take on Wake Forest and start the NCAA tournament this week.

The Cats have built a program that competes in the toughest conference in the country, not simply by chasing the biggest names or highest rankings, but by building the right roster and developing talent. Power hitters matter. So does bullpen depth. Defense matters. Leadership matters. The teams that make it to the end are usually the ones with the best combination of talent, chemistry, preparation, and trust in their system.

That same idea applies when employers build a self-funded health plan.

Long-term success for a plan rarely comes from finding the path of least resistance. It comes from finding a TPA who will do the research, assemble the right mix of partners, and leverage their expertise to create long-term stability.

Built Over Time: What Lasting Success Really Looks Like

If you’ve spent any time watching SEC baseball, you know one thing pretty quickly. Nobody just shows up and becomes a powerhouse.

Programs like Kentucky, LSU, and Vanderbilt didn’t flip a switch one year and suddenly figure it out. It’s been built over time. Good recruiting classes. Player development that doesn’t stop. Coaches who stick to what they believe in even when a weekend series doesn’t go their way.

Some years are better than others, sure. That’s baseball. But the programs that stay in the mix every season usually have something deeper working in their favor.

They’ve built something that lasts.

I think there’s a natural parallel to how strong self-funded plans come together.

Building Your “Dream Team”

Every June, college baseball fans start to predict who will head to Omaha and the College World Series. It’s easy to look at rankings to inform your guess, but the top eight seeds have never advanced to the CWS. However, those who do make it share a common thread among their rosters.

They are built with intention.

It’s not just about having the hardest throwers or the biggest bats. It’s about how the pieces come together: depth in the bullpen, defensive consistency, veteran leadership, and of course, the transfer portal. The list could go on.

With Kentucky’s baseball program, that balance becomes even more important in the hyper-competitive SEC. When you’re regularly facing top prospects across every position, that makes it even more important to put together a roster that can compete with the best. In the offseason, coaches are identifying the right mix of players who fit the system, buy into the culture, and focus on getting better with each game. That’s what turns a good team in March into a dangerous one in June.

Why the Pursuit of Perfection Still Matters

No college baseball team has ever gone undefeated on their way to winning the College World Series. That simple fact says a lot about the game, but it also says something bigger about how excellence is measured.

Baseball has a way of exposing every weakness of every team over time. Even the most talented teams are going to lose games. They hit slumps, make errors, and run into week-long stretches where nothing seems to come easy. A long season (60+ games) guarantees adversity. What separates great programs from everyone else is how they respond when that adversity shows up.

The best teams don’t let setbacks define them. They treat each opportunity to take the field with focus, discipline, and a clear standard for how they want to play. They chase perfection knowing they’ll never fully reach it, but that mindset is often what keeps them moving forward.

That same principle applies in self-funded benefits.

How Partnerships Make Winning Plays

It’s been said by many but still rings true: NIL has changed college athletics forever. The ability for student athletes to profit on their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) has reshaped recruiting, exploded into multi-million dollar contracts, and the programs that understand how to build the right alliances are gaining ground quickly.

You can see it in how recruiting decisions get made now with the Cats. Talent still matters, but so does the support system around that talent. When a top-15 MLB prospect like Tyler Bell commits to UK, it’s not just about facilities or tradition. Not to say that’s not still a factor, but commitment decisions in this era reflect a network of support that includes collectives, local businesses, alumni, and advisors who believe in the program and the player. Strong partnerships make it possible to attract elite talent and create an environment where that talent can thrive.

NIL has made one thing clear: success is rarely built alone.

What Underdog Teams Can Teach Us About Success in Self-Funding

If you follow college sports long enough (and college baseball in particular), you know every few years a team comes out of nowhere, gets hot at the right time, and makes a run that nobody predicted.

They weren’t the preseason favorite. They didn’t dominate headlines in February. They may have barely snuck into the tournament, but by the time the postseason arrives, they’re still playing. Think about a team like 2008 Fresno State or, more recently, Murray State’s unexpected run to the College World Series last year. These programs didn’t rely on hype or star power but found success by staying disciplined in the basics.

Teams like that aren’t trying to reinvent the game. They just stay committed to the fundamentals and let that consistency carry them.

Scouting and Stop-Loss: How Data Drives Smarter Decisions On and Off the Diamond

If you’re a Kentucky fan, you know it always feels like something is right around the corner. Just as one season wraps up, another one is right around the corner. And with spring fast approaching, it’s about time we turn our attention to the Wildcats on the diamond, who have just started their journey on the road to Omaha.

There’s something special about baseball in Lexington. The start of the season brings its own kind of energy, and once again, the Wildcats are expected to be right in the mix in the SEC with a strong returning lineup. But as any baseball coach will tell you, success doesn’t start when the lights come on. It starts with the work that happens long before the first pitch.

Finding Peace Among “Madness”

The NCAA Tournament is not just an annual display of top collegiate basketball talent; it’s a time of high stakes, unpredictability, and intense competition. March’s greatest spectacle challenges teams to adapt, improvise, and overcome, but its unpredictability also sheds light on effective strategies for managing healthcare across diverse employee populations with varying health needs.

The Power of the Sixth Man: Supporting Roles in Business and Sports

In basketball, success doesn’t hinge on the starting five alone—it’s about the entire rotation’s ability to adapt and the unsung heroes off the bench making the team stronger and more consistent. One of the best examples of a bench player leading? Devin Booker, a former SEC 6th Man of the Year and future NBA star, came off the bench during Kentucky’s historic 2015 season because it was what the team needed to win at an unprecedented rate. Although they didn’t win it all, that team was legendary thanks in large part to their depth.

Championship Mentality: How Mark Pope is Leading UK Back to Glory

In the world of college basketball, leadership isn’t just about calling plays—it’s about inspiring a team, a community, and even a legacy. Mark Pope, a 1996 National Champion with the University of Kentucky, understands this deeply. His return to Lexington isn’t just about retooling the program; it’s about reigniting the passion and pride that defines Big Blue Nation.

Adapting to Win: Adjusting Your Game Plan Mid-Season

Every season, sports teams face the challenge of adapting to unexpected situations. It’s happening for the Wildcats right now after a few losses to unranked teams that I honestly didn’t see coming. I know we haven’t been getting the outcomes we have wanted, but I also know this: The University of Kentucky (UK) basketball program excels not only in their gameplay but in their strategic flexibility—making crucial adjustments to overcome new challenges. This practice offers valuable lessons for businesses, especially in rapidly evolving industries like the self-funded insurance space we operate in.

More than a Game: Timeless Lessons from Big Blue Nation

In the heart of the Bluegrass State, basketball is not merely a sport—it’s a cultural phenomenon. Collectively known as Big Blue Nation (which I am a PROUD member of), fans of the University of Kentucky Wildcats exhibit a passion that transcends the boundaries of the game, creating a vibrant community dedicated to both athletic and community excellence.

Fast Break Opportunities: Seizing the Moment in Sports and Sales

A high-flying offense bounding down the court in a fast break is one of the most exciting moments in sports. One minute you’re watching a slow-building, methodical position, the next you’re watching the UK Wildcats take off down the court, and suddenly the game shifts in an instant. Being successful in a fast break opportunity is all about speed, precision, teamwork, and seizing the opportunity before the other team can even react. As a fan, those moments make your heart race. As a business professional, they make you stop and think.

Turning Losses into Wins: Lessons from the Court and the Sales Floor

As a UK basketball (and football) fan and a sales executive, I’ve seen my fair share of defeats. Losses sting—whether it’s a missed opportunity like the Wildcats’ first-round upset in last year’s NCAA tournament or a hard “no” from a potential client. But here’s the thing: losing is only permanent if you let it be.

Playing Defense—Protecting What Matters Most in Business

Playing Defense in Basketball & Business

As a lifelong basketball fan, I’ve watched the Wildcats make defense a core part of their success. But it’s not just about blocking shots or stealing the ball—it’s about controlling the game, maintaining your lead, and ultimately securing the win. That’s how the Cats beat Duke in a back and forth battle on November 12, and the same concept applies to business.

Three-Point Leadership: Lessons from the Court to the Boardroom

The game of basketball is rich with lessons that transcend the court and apply to leadership in every arena of life. For players like Reed Sheppard, Tyrese Maxey, and Jamal Murray, their time at the University of Kentucky wasn’t just about perfecting their jump shots; it was about honing leadership skills that would carry them to NBA stardom. Maxey is now an All-Star with the 76ers, Murray has won a league championship with the Nuggets, and Sheppard, the #3 overall draft pick, is poised to make his mark with the Houston Rockets.

New Season, New Opportunities

A Clean Slate Can Inspire

Big Blue Nation is feeling the buzz of possibility as we officially begin a new season! The Wildcat’s record is spotless through three games so far, with a team of fresh faces determined to bring UK back to championship glory. This squad may be a tad underestimated (and under-ranked at #23) after losing two top 10 NBA draft picks and parting ways with our longtime head coach, but the talent and focus are clear after winning by 41 points in the opening game, a subtle nod to a famous #41, new UK coach and former Wildcat Mark Pope.

Learning from the Court: UK’s Winning Strategy

The University of Kentucky men’s basketball team has always set the bar high when it comes to identifying and developing talent with eight national titles and eight #1 recruiting classes since 2010. UK’s players don’t just shine in college—they often make waves in the NBA, too!
